Remember When You Were Just Starting Out?

So, I survived the pandemic as did my immediate family and close friends. It was challenging for sure. However, I believe I will look back on those 15 or so months with gratitude. I learned a lot about myself and others. A few friendships have deepened, and I even made new friends through outdoor activities. My cooking skills have improved, and I’ve added to my favorite recipe list. Technology was my friend. I re-watched the “Star Wars” movies in order – I – IX. I now understand the Jedi family tree.  All in all, I’d rate the time spent as a B+. I missed traveling and celebrating some milestones but everything else was good. How would you rate your time spent during the pandemic?

And now, life goes on.  My niece graduated this year with a master’s degree. It was time for her to look for a job and start her life in the ‘real world’. Luckily for me, she landed one in adopted hometown of Phoenix. I love it here and know she will too. She packed up her 10-year-old Toyota Camry and drove 33 hours across the country to start her new life… staying with her ol’ aunt.

Yep, I had a roommate for about 4 weeks this summer and it was fun. It was also thought-provoking, interesting and encouraging. We had great conversations. She fell in love with Pickleball as have I. She’s her own person – a very capable adult. When did that happen?

Do you remember just starting out? I remember being nervous and not really liking my job. She is not going to make a lot of money in her chosen profession, but she is happy. I keep telling her that happiness is the most important goal in life. If she found what makes her happiest at 24, she is way ahead of most people.

It’s scary to think about just starting out in life in a new city with no friends. It made me very happy to be her weigh station between graduate school and an apartment. Thanks to all my friends for donating furniture to get her started. Now, she’s on her own. Only 40 years until retirement! What do you remember about just starting out? Please leave comments below.

  1. Thanks for the great post! It was a long time ago, but I moved to Chicago and started a new job. Now, 30+ years later, I am in Scottsdale! The rest is just details!
