067 PD Medication Review – The Art and The Science

It’s been over a year since we have focused an episode of the Parkinson’s Experience on medication. These episodes are always popular. Even if you think you know a lot about the choices available to treat the motor and non-motor symptoms of PD, I urge you to still listen in. There is always new information and new medications and something for everyone to learn. So, my guest, a movement disorder specialist, and I discuss that getting the correct combination of medications for each individual is as much of an art as it is a science. We will cover most drugs available for both motor and non-motor symptoms, why and when to use them and possible side effects, and touch on meds in the pipeline working their way to the market (hopefully) – all in a short time span. It will be a little like speed dating. So, buckle up and keep listening. Enjoy the show and I hope this is helpful. https://doctors.bannerhealth.com/provider/David+Shprecher/452122  https://dbsandme.com  Thank you to my sponsor, Boston Scientific, the maker of Vercise Genus, a Deep Brain Stimulation or DBS system. 1. Really enjoyed this podcast. Granted, I don’t really have medication issues – my combination of Sinemet and Selegiline has been working for me for 5 years. However, I do often have people asking me for advice and this episode helps me to keep current. I was particularly interested in the brief allusions to 1) early usage of levadopa may actually improve the long term prognosis and 2) the combination of levadopa and MAO-B inhibitors can be greater than the sum of the parts. As you know, Sheryl, I am an avid runner. Last year I experimented on my dosages and found that compared to no medications, Sinemet helped my stamina and running speed and generally the more I took the better I performed. But when I combined the Sinemet with Selegiline I immediately experienced much better stamina then with Sinemet alone. The result astounded me (#2 above). I’ve come to believe that the combination of these drugs enables me to keep up the intense running that has stopped PD progression in me (#1 above).
